YouTube Shorts is getting a major upgrade with the integration of Google DeepMind’s latest AI video model, Veo 2. This new feature allows creators to generate AI-powered video clips using simple text prompts, expanding the creative possibilities for Shorts content.
Veo 2 serves as Google’s answer to OpenAI’s Sora, a text-to-video generator. Previously, YouTube’s Dream Screen feature enabled creators to generate AI-generated backgrounds for their Shorts. Now, with Veo 2, they can create complete video clips and seamlessly add them to their content.
Enhanced Realism and Faster AI Processing
According to Dina Berrada, YouTube’s Director of Product, Veo 2 offers significant improvements in video quality and efficiency.
“Veo 2 understands real-world physics and human movement better, making its output more detailed and realistic,” Berrada shared in a blog post. “You can even specify a style, lens, or cinematic effect, making Dream Screen an easy and fun way to express yourself.”
To ensure transparency, all AI-generated content will be marked using DeepMind’s SynthID tool, which embeds a digital watermark to identify synthetic media. YouTube will also clearly label AI-generated videos to minimize the risk of misinformation.
How to Use Veo 2 in YouTube Shorts
Creators can access Veo 2 through the Shorts camera by following these steps:
- To generate a video background, open the Shorts camera, select Green Screen, then navigate to Dream Screen and enter a text prompt.
- To create a standalone video clip, open the Shorts camera, tap Add to access the media picker, then select Create at the top. After entering a prompt, choose an image, tap Create Video, and select the desired clip length.
Initial Rollout and Future Expansion
The Veo 2-powered feature launches on Thursday for creators in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, with plans for broader availability in the future.
With Veo 2, YouTube Shorts continues to push the boundaries of AI-driven creativity, offering faster, high-quality video generation for a new era of content creation.
