OpenAI is preparing to launch a new wave of artificial intelligence technology with an autonomous agent, reportedly named "Operator," which is expected to debut in January.
According to Bloomberg, "Operator" is designed to handle various tasks on behalf of users, including coding and arranging travel, based on insights from sources familiar with the project. OpenAI reportedly informed its employees during a recent meeting that the AI agent would initially be available as a research preview and accessible via its application programming interface (API).
In addition to "Operator," OpenAI is developing related tools, including one that can complete tasks directly within a web browser. Sources indicate that this browser-based tool is nearing completion, though OpenAI has not yet commented publicly on these developments.
OpenAI’s strategic partner and investor, Microsoft, announced in October that users of its Copilot AI platform could create autonomous agents within Copilot Studio starting this month. These agents are designed to interpret and respond to users' work needs on their behalf.
Industry leaders like Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg have also discussed the future impact of AI assistants. In a July conversation, Huang predicted that AI tools will become ubiquitous, with every restaurant and website potentially hosting an AI assistant. Zuckerberg echoed this vision, suggesting that, much like businesses today have email, websites, and social media accounts, they will also have AI agents in the near future.
Recently, OpenAI also introduced web-browsing capabilities in ChatGPT, allowing users to search for information and get answers with sources linked directly in their responses. This feature, launched in October, aims to provide users with a more conversational and intuitive search experience.
