Nvidia's Edify 3D Lets You Generate 3D Models

If you’re unfamiliar with Nvidia Edify and its impressive 3D modeling capabilities, now’s the perfect time to learn more.

Nvidia, renowned as the largest company of its kind on the American Stock Exchange, is best known for its cutting-edge hardware and data center solutions. However, the company is also exploring innovative, consumer-focused technologies, and one of the standout offerings is Nvidia Edify.

Transforming 2D to 3D

Nvidia Edify enables users to create detailed 3D models from simple 2D images or text inputs. Whether it’s a vehicle, a cartoon character, a cozy sofa, or any other object, Edify brings your imagination to life.

The platform has diverse applications, spanning gaming, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and retail. It has even benefited from a collaboration with Shutterstock, leveraging their extensive data to refine its capabilities.

How It Works: Under the Hood

At the core of Nvidia Edify is its use of quad mesh models, which construct 3D objects using quadrilateral polygons. This approach ensures natural edge flow, flexibility for subdivision modeling, and ease of rigging for animations.

The process integrates RGB values and surface contours via a diffusion model while employing physically based rendering (PBR) materials. PBR simulates realistic surface interactions with light, using properties like base color, roughness, and mapping to enhance realism.

Powered by Nvidia AI

Nvidia Edify operates through Nvidia Inference Microservices (NIM), a component of the Nvidia AI Enterprise platform. NIM provides API tools for container orchestration and Kubernetes cluster management.

Other Nvidia AI Enterprise tools include GPU-accelerated libraries, the NGC catalog for deployment resources, and the Base Command Manager, which oversees workload and container operations. Clients also benefit from the Nvidia network operator and other AI workflow tools tailored for enterprise infrastructure.

Who’s Using Edify?

On the consumer side, Edify is gaining traction among independent developers and gamers eager to create digital 3D objects. Brands are also leveraging its capabilities.

For example:

  • Mattel uses Edify to help toy designers visualize products.
  • Marketing firm WPP and Coca-Cola are employing Getty Images’ Generative AI, built on Nvidia’s technology, for custom visuals that align with brand guidelines.
  • Adobe is rumored to integrate Edify into Adobe Firefly for enhanced creative workflows.
  • Accenture, in partnership with Nvidia and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), has utilized Edify through Nvidia Omniverse to create high-fidelity digital twins of the Defender vehicle.

A Glimpse of the Future

The Defender, a British-made vehicle introduced in 1948 and officially named in 1990, is now being recreated as high-resolution digital twins to showcase its design globally.

This highlights the transformative power of Edify and similar technologies. What began with stable diffusion and 2D generative AI has evolved into sophisticated 3D modeling tools, paving the way for the Metaverse, immersive VR/AR environments, and the future of digital creation.

NVIDIA Edify is a multimodal architecture for developing visual generative AI models for image, 3D, 360 HDRi, physically based rendering (PBR) materials, and video. Using NVIDIA AI Foundry, service providers can train and customize Edify models to build commercially viable visual services built on top of NVIDIA NIM™.
