Instagram is developing an advanced AI video editing feature, scheduled for release in 2024, that promises to revolutionize how users modify their video content. The technology, which leverages Meta's Movie Gen AI model, will enable creators to transform virtually any element of their videos through simple text commands.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri demonstrated the technology's capabilities in a recent preview. The demonstration showcased various impressive transformations, from subtle additions like inserting a gold chain necklace to more dramatic changes such as completely altering background environments and even transforming Mosseri's appearance into a felt puppet character.
A notable technical achievement highlighted in the preview was the system's ability to maintain visual consistency during movement, with edited elements staying properly aligned even during rapid gestures and facial movements. However, the brevity of the demonstration clips - each lasting only a moment - leaves questions about the technology's real-world performance, especially given that other recent AI video tools haven't always matched their polished preview demonstrations.
This development follows Meta's October announcement of Movie Gen AI, their proprietary video generation system designed to maintain human identity and motion integrity in edited content. While Meta joins competitors like OpenAI's Sora and Adobe's Firefly Video in the AI video space, Instagram marks the company's first confirmed application of their Movie Gen technology. Though Adobe has already begun implementing their Firefly Video model in Premiere Pro beta features, Meta has yet to announce a broader release timeline for Movie Gen beyond its planned Instagram integration.
