To compete with ChatGPT and Apple Intelligence, Google is reportedly preparing to release a dedicated Gemini AI app for iPhone users. At present, Gemini AI's features are only accessible within the Google app, offering limited functionality. However, this might soon change, as rumors suggest that iPhones could soon receive a standalone Gemini app, allowing users to experience Google’s AI capabilities more fully.
If this standalone app launches, Google could gain an advantage over ChatGPT and Apple Intelligence, which are currently limited to the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and upcoming iPhone 16 models. In contrast, Google might extend Gemini’s AI features to older iPhone models as well, potentially reaching a larger user base.
The standalone app would provide iPhone users with a more streamlined and direct AI assistant experience, giving Google an edge by making AI accessible to millions of users with older devices—those who may miss out on Apple Intelligence features due to hardware limitations on the latest iPhones.
Reports indicate that an iPhone user from the Philippines successfully downloaded the standalone Gemini app from the App Store and shared an unofficial App Store link to the app. However, the app is still unavailable outside of the Philippines.
Additionally, a Reddit user, u/lostshenanigans, posted screenshots showcasing new features within the Gemini app that are not yet available in its current integration in the Google app. Google is expected to unveil an updated interface for Gemini on iOS.
One prominent feature is Gemini Live, which allows users to interact with the AI assistant using voice commands. Currently, Gemini Live is only available on Android devices, but it is expected to debut on iOS with added functionality. For instance, Gemini Live may support Live Activities on iOS, enabling the assistant to remain active in the background, accessible through voice commands or custom actions. However, it’s still uncertain which iPhone models and iOS versions will fully support these advanced Gemini AI features.
Currently, the standalone Gemini AI app is in a testing phase, with a broader release anticipated in the coming weeks.
